VAT and customs when ordering from Amazon within Europe
By bezprice-redactie · Published on 3 September 2026 · Last reviewed on 4 September 2026
Part of the price difference between European Amazon stores comes down to VAT. Every country applies its own rate — Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Sweden are all on a different percentage — and that VAT is already built into the consumer price.
This guide explains which VAT rate applies to a cross-border order, when you might run into import duties or customs costs, and how that carries through to what you see on bezprice. We show the retrieved item price including VAT with a timestamp; what you ultimately pay is decided at checkout on Amazon.

Why prices are shown including VAT
Consumer prices in European online stores are shown including VAT. That makes comparing easier: you compare amounts customers actually pay for the item, not bare net prices.
Because VAT rates differ per country, the same product with the same net amount can still have a different consumer price. More background is in why prices differ by country.
Which VAT rate applies to a cross-border order?
For sales to consumers within the EU, VAT is generally charged according to the rules of the country the order is delivered to. The price you see in the store can therefore still change slightly at checkout once your address is known.
Always check the final amount at checkout, not just the price on the product page. Always check the current terms, availability and total price directly with Amazon before you order.
When does customs come into play?
Goods move freely within the European Union. For an order shipped from one EU country to another EU country, import duties normally don't apply.
- Watch the seller's location: a seller listed on a European Amazon store can still ship from a country outside the EU.
- For shipments from outside the EU, import duties, import VAT and clearance costs can be added.
- In that case, Amazon often shows an estimated amount for import costs at checkout.
A practical approach when comparing
- First compare the item price including VAT per store in the search function.
- Click through to the store with the lowest price and enter your address.
- Check whether the final amount differs due to VAT, shipping or import costs.
- Compare that final amount with the store you'd normally use.
Shipping costs are often more decisive than the VAT difference. See the guide to shipping costs and, if you want to order from a particular foreign store, the steps for ordering from European Amazon stores.
VAT, currency and Swedish krona at Amazon.se
Not every European Amazon store prices in euros. At Amazon.se, the price is in Swedish krona; we convert it to euros to make comparison possible. The rate your bank or Amazon applies at checkout can differ from our conversion.
- At checkout, consciously choose between paying in the local currency or in euros; the conversion differs per provider.
- For a small price difference, allow a margin for exchange-rate and transaction costs.
- A refund after a return can differ slightly due to exchange-rate movements; see returning to a foreign Amazon store.
Frequently asked questions
Do bezprice prices include VAT?
Yes. We show the retrieved item price including VAT, with the retrieval time. Shipping costs and any surcharges are not included.
Do I pay import duties when ordering from a foreign Amazon store?
Normally not, when shipped from an EU country. If a seller ships from outside the EU, import costs can be added; you'll see this at checkout on Amazon.
Which VAT rate do I pay when ordering from a foreign Amazon store?
For sales to consumers within the EU, the rate of the delivery country generally applies. The price can therefore still change slightly at checkout once your delivery address is known; always check the final amount.
Can I reclaim VAT as a private individual on a foreign Amazon order?
No. VAT refunds are intended for business buyers with a valid VAT number and go through the invoice at Amazon itself, not via bezprice.
